A van driver and a Transport Malta official have been charged in connection with the death of a 77-year-old woman who was fatally struck in Qormi in August 2024.
Francis Degiorgio, 34, who was driving an Isuzu van, and Jesmond Muscat, 56, who was on duty at the time, have both been accused of involuntarily causing the death of Carmen Buttigieg through alleged negligence.
The incident took place on 27 August 2024 in Triq Isqof Scicluna. Degiorgio is also facing an additional charge of reckless driving.
The two men appeared in court by summons before Magistrate Marse-Ann Farrugia, where they both pleaded not guilty.
Although time had been allocated for the presentation of evidence, both the prosecution and defence were unaware and had not prepared accordingly. As a result, the case was adjourned to October 7.
At the time of the incident, reports indicated that the accident occurred near the well-known Taโ Kalฤ Bakery, with photos from the scene showing roadworks underway in the area.
The prosecution is being led by lawyers Ramon Bonett Sladden and Jurgen Dalli from the Office of the Attorney General, alongside Police Inspector Wayne Bonello.
The victimโs family is being represented by lawyers Franco Debono and Marion Camilleri, while Nikolai Bugeja and Alexander Boichuk are appearing for the accused.
