One of the most out-of-touch and delusional imbeciles within the Labour Party parliamentary group is Alison Zerafa Civelli, who once told Valletta residents complaining about new government night-time noise regulations that they had previously been ashamed to say they were from Valletta — until the Labour government turned the city into a nightlife hub. She is also the Prime Minister’s sister-in-law.
A more diplomatic description would be tone-deaf. Watch below the Junior Minister Keith Azzopardi and Alison Zerafa Civelli unable to reply to a simple question about inflation. “People in their homes are living in tranquility” – she said. How delightful.
Allow me to explain what inflation is – or you may listen to the Fed Chair himself explain it: inflation is the rise of prices year on year, and therefore it is a compounding process. There is nothing to be tranquil about ever increasing food inflation in Malta. Malta faces severe inflationary risks.
You would expect MPs to understand some basic economics and to address issues accordingly but these are great expectations for the Labour Party. In the process towards a dictatorship, political discourse is overwhelmingly controlled by the party-in-government and most of is reduced to gibberish propaganda. There are no serious discussions about serious issues any longer. When faced with difficult issues, MPs have nothing to say other than repeating what the Prime Minister says at his Sunday rallies.
Junior Minister Keith Azzopardi replied to Net News by giving the subsidies refrain. The universal Labour Party script is that inflation will be addressed by subsidies. So far, no one in Labour, and not even the Finance Minister himself has been able to admit in public that Labour’s only solution to inflation and higher energy prices is “subsidies as inflation persists”.
But the problem is that inflation will persist, even if it goes lower – inflation does not go away. Here, the Finance Minister is not being fully honest, despite having a reputation for speaking truth to power when his colleagues are silent. The economic policy of offsetting inflation ad infinitum is a Third World Country economic policy, which ahs often led to fiscal crises.
Subsidies are meant to be emergency measures and not a long-term economic policy. MPs have now normalised the idea that subsidies can go on indefinitely – and this is something to even be proud of. So far there have been no discussions on strategic solutions.
Labour refuses to offer strategic solutions out of incompetencr but alsop indifference. Ironically, Alison Zerafa’s tranquility comment explains Labour’s state of mind. Faced with serious national issues, the Labour Party is tranquil as it ignores the elephant in the room. MPs should be pulling their hair out in frustration at the difficult problems they are trying to solve not living a life of tranquility.
At best, Labour is promising lower energy prices by covering Malta’s fields with solar panels and adding a wind-turbine – this won’t reduce energy prices and this is just insanity.
The bottom line is that they don’t care. For the moment there is enough money for temporary solutions but Labour doesn’t genuinely care about the state of society or its future – they are too concerned with holding on to power and conducting politics to this end, whilst missing the point of being in government in the first place.
Let them eat tranquility.
