Fake outrage and wasting our time with more mediocrity

Earlier this week, there was a pseudo-controversy in the Maltese press about the Authority for the Responsible Use of Cannabis donating some money to the Malta Football Association for the use of nursery clubs. Around €250 will be donated to every child and the biggest controversy here is that the government made the announcement with a press conference that probably cost as much as the donations itself.

However, the controversy, also pushed by our fake and aristocratic intellectuals, is that this donation should not have taken place because drugs and sports should not mix.  The Nationalist Party has now jumped on the bandwagon and the Opposition is also taking the matter seriously, issuing a public statement and denouncing the donation. Caritas also chimed in and condemned it.

The irony is that Caritas does technically receive donations from gambling companies and activities particularly from the Malta Lotteries. It has been common, normal and even widely accepted that the legal vice industries make contributions to good causes. The Malta Lottery was originally introduced as a means to collect income for social expenditure.

What I find most controversial in all of this is not that the cannabis authority is donating money to football nurseries. What I find controversial is that government minister Rebekah Buttigieg appears to have so much free time in her schedule that she can attend a press conference about such a minor donation, presenting it in a manner reminiscent of a feudal lord distributing pennies to the street kids.

There is also an unwitting sense of deception of here. As conservatives rile themselves up on a non-issue, Labour is diverting attention from the more important matters. The “intellectuals” causing a controversy about this are total opportunistic frauds. You don’t waste your time on petty issues when the whole country and nation are being compromised by a crumbling rule-of-law and withering democracy, unless you are a fraud who wants to ingratiate the government by aiding it in its diversions.
