Suspected unexploded ordnance was discovered underwater in the area of Gฤงar Lapsi following a report made earlier on Saturday by a member of the diving community to the Armed Forces of Malta Operations Centre.
A team of Explosive Ordnance Disposal specialists from the AFMโs 3rd Regiment was immediately deployed to the site. With the assistance of the Malta Police Force, a secure perimeter was established and all necessary safety measures were put in place.
The object was identified as a British 4-inch Armstrong muzzle-loaded shell dating back to the pre-World War I period. It was safely recovered and transported to the Pembroke Ranges, where it was later disposed of through a controlled detonation.

A pre World War I bomb of the UXO type has been found on the seabed at Lapsi in the limits of Siggiewi. The news was announced by Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri in a Facebook post. He added that the Armed Forces of Malta will be proceeding with a controlled explosion of the ordnance.
This is the fourth discovery of unexploded ordnance in recent weeks. A WWII grenade was found in Mqabba, whilst there were also finds in Birzebbugaย andย Rabat.
