The Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) were called into action twice over the past 24 hours, as Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) operators safely handled suspected World War II-era explosives discovered in Rabat and Buġibba.
In the first incident, which took place on Friday evening, the AFM’s EOD team from 3 Regiment responded to a report at a private residence in Rabat. The item was identified as a British 3.7-inch projectile dating back to World War II. Officers from the Malta Police Force assisted at the scene.
Following a thorough inspection, the projectile was transported under controlled conditions to AFM facilities in Pembroke, where it was safely disposed of the following morning.
A second callout was registered on Saturday afternoon after a report through the 112 emergency line led authorities to two suspected items in Birżebbuġa. Upon assessment, EOD specialists confirmed one item as another 3.7-inch British projectile, while the second was identified as a 3-inch mortar round.
The mortar round was found to contain no explosive material. The projectile, however, was secured and transferred to the AFM’s military area in Pembroke, where it was safely disposed of in line with standard procedures.
These incidents highlight the continued discovery of historical wartime ordnance across Malta, with this marking the second such find in recent weeks following a similar case in Mqabba earlier this month. Authorities continue to urge the public to report any suspicious objects immediately and avoid handling them.
