The Philippines has been the first country to declare a national emergency over an ongoing fuel and energy crises as a result of the ongoing war in Iran and the Battle of Hormuz. Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have declared energy rationing measures while fuel shortages have also been reported in India. Energy saving-measures have been declared in Egypt where all cafes and bars in Cairo have been ordered to close by 9PM.
Many videos are circulating online of people in India fighting over fuel in fuel-stations. India imports a significant amount of its oil via the Persian Gulf.
The European Commission is currently working on a set of new measures to address soaring energy prices and electricity prices in Europe.
Saudi Arabia is actively re-routing its oil exports to the Red Sea via the East-West pipeline. The UAE is also increasing its oil exports via the the Fujairah port according to Bloomberg.
The war in Iran has escalated again by the end this week with a resumption of intense airstrikes by the US and Israel. Israel also target Iran’s nuclear sites and its missile factory in the mountains of Yazd (feature photo). The IRGC have issued a statement that they will strike Israeli and US universities in the region after a university was struck in Iran. The Houthis, allies of the Iranian regime, have also joined the war by launching missiles and drones ta Israel. Drone and missiles strikes by Iran against the Gulf states are also ongoing.
There have been many reports that the US intends to disembark troops in Iran and the USS Tripoli has been reported to have arrived in the region along with a contingent of US Marines, ho are ready to be deployed (photo below). However, at the end of the week, US President Donald Trump downplayed the war in Iran and said that it was only a “military operation”.ย European states have reiterated their position that they will only be involved in policing the Strait of Hormuz after the war is over and are insisting on de-escalation.
