European leaders at the G7 meeting in Évian-les-Bains, Haute-Savoie, France have reiterated their position on Iran and the Strait of Hormuz after US Secretary of state Marco Rubio shared President Donald Trump’s appeals for help. The European leaders however have reiterated their position that they will not be involved in naval missions in the Strait of Hormuz until the war is over.
Speaking to the press before the meeting, the EU High Representative Kaja Kallas said that the war in Iran needs to de-escalate and off-ramp found. She added that as the war in Iran rages on, we should not forget Russia’s war on Ukraine and that the current spike in oil prices is aiding Russia’s war efforts. The EU Vice-Commissioner also confirmed that in the US-led negotiations with Ukraine, Russia is proposing Ukraine to cede territories it has not yet conquered including the Donbas region. Ukrainian Foreign Affairs Minister Andrii Sybiha also attended a meeting with the G7 group.
The meeting concluded with a joint-statement urging Iran to stop its attack on the Gulf states and energy facilities and that Iran should never obtain a nuclear bomb. US State Secretary Marco Rubio accused NATO allies of refusing to help the US in its war on Iran after the US had helped Ukraine with its war at home.
During the G7 meeting, European leaders shared intelligence with the US State Secretary of Russia aiding Iran military efforts including by providing intelligence such as the location and positions of US ships and military assets. Secretary Ro had nothing to say about this to the press other than that Russia’s help to Iran is not affecting in any way the US military operations.
Other crises which were discussed included Venezuela, Cuba, and Sudan. No joint statements were released on these issues.
