NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has travelled to Washington to hold meetings with the US administration and US President Donald Trump. The meeting revolved mostly on the war on Iran and President’s Trump’s protests against NATO for the lack of help they provided in the US war war against Iran. Talks are currently ongoing between the Islamic regime and the US administration.
European NATO allies refused to join the war on Iran and committed themselves to support security measures in the Strait of Hormuz only after the war is over. President Trump is protesting against this lack of participation and is insisting that he wants to leave NATO given that NATO was not being helpful to the US.
There were no press conferences or briefings about the meeting. Speaking to CNN, Secretary-General Mark Rutte said that he understood President Trump’s disappointment but also insisted that NATO was very supportive of President Trump’s war against Iran by providing military and air bases for US forces. US forces used NATO bases in the UK, Germany and also Sicily before access was revoked by the Italian government after President Trumps civilisation threat. He also added that the world is much safer after the war on Iran especially after the US destroyed Iran’s military capabilities.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has adopted a very diplomatic approach to President Trump which many see as ingratiating. On the other hand, the NATO Secretary-General considers his role to prioritise the unity and the preservation of the NATO alliance.
