There is an ongoing record turnout of voters in Hungary’s general election right now. By 9AM, 16.89% of voters had already cast ballots, far higher than the 10.31% recorded at the same time four years ago. Analysts expect final turnout to exceed 75% and become the highest in the country’s history. Polling stations opened at 6AM and will close at 7PM, with first results expected around 9 pm local time.
Viktor Orban of Fidesz, is facing a looming defeat against his opponent Peter Magyar of the Tisza Party. Orban’s government is famous for its anti-immigration policies and for acting as a Russian vassal in Europe. By most metrics, Hungary is the poorest country in Europe and also the most corrupt.
Viktor Orban centered his political campaign on fearmongering about Russia and Ukraine and slandering Ukraine and President Volodymyr Zelensky, while Peter Magyar focused his campaign on Viktor Orban’s corruption, the extended economic stagnation and the widespread corrupt use of EU funds by Orban and his government.
