The EU Foreign Council meeting in Luxembourg ended on a positive note, as the loan to Ukraine was approved by the ambassadors and is now set to go for final approval in the coming days at a Council meeting. The €90 billion package, which had been delayed for months by Hungary’s veto, is expected to provide critical financial support to Ukraine’s war-strained economy. The EU 20th sanctions package, previously opposed by Malta will also be approved.
Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, who was present for the session on Lebanon, said that the country is facing increasing instability and urgently needs support from its European partners. He highlighted the fragile ceasefire situation with Israel and the ongoing challenges in restoring state authority over Hezbollah and armed groups. Hezbollah is required to disarm and withdraw from the south of Lebanon as per the previous ceasefire agreement of 2024.
Premier Salam stressed that Lebanon is at a critical juncture, warning that without sustained international backing, the country risks further deterioration both economically and politically. He also called for continued diplomatic engagement and assistance from the EU to stabilise the region and support reconstruction efforts.
