More sanctions against Russia incoming: EU to revisit red lines – Kaja Kallas

During today’s informal European Council meeting in Cyprus, EU High Representative Kaja Kallas said that the EU is now planning a 21st sanctions package against Russia that revisits previous red lines. The Vice-Commissioner President said that we have to make sure to send the message that Ukraine is more important for Europe than it is to Russia.

The announcement comes just as the EU Council formally approved the โ‚ฌ90 billion loan to Ukraine and also a 20th sanctions package that was previously opposed by Malta, Cyprus and Greece. The EU has also cut funding to the Venice Biennale for accepting Russia’s formal participation in the event.

In a press conference, with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, French President Emmanuel Macron reiterated France’s support for Cyprus in relation to security and defence matters. France provided naval and military support to Cyprus after Iranian drones targeted the British base on the island. The French President also commented on the situation in the Near East and stated that Israel should immediately withdraw from Lebanon and halt its land grabs, which are causing more wars and instability in the region. The heads of governments will also be discussing the EU’s budget. Malta’s Prime Minister Robert Abela is also present for the summit.
