Marco Micallef appointed Ambassador to the United States of America

Marco Micallef has been approved by Parliament as the Ambassador to the Untied States of America. He will be replacing Godfrey Xuereb.

Mark Micallef served as Advisor to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Ian Borg, in the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Tourism (a role he has held since January 2025).

He is a longtime close aide to Minister Ian Borg, and held several senior positions in Borg’s offices across different ministries. He served as Chief of Staff for over four years, first at the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects and later at the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade. Prior to that, he was the Minister’s Private Secretary and acted as Secretariat Coordinator when Borg served as Parliamentary Secretary for the EU Presidency 2017 and EU Funds.

Earlier in his career, Micallef spent three years in Brussels as Deputy Mertens at the Permanent Representation of Malta to the European Union. He played a key political and coordinating role during Malta’s tenure as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (2023–2024) and during Malta’s 2024 Chairmanship of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

For his contributions as Chief of Staff to Malta’s Foreign Minister, Micallef received an honour conferred by the Italian authorities in recognition of successful political initiatives and bilateral cooperation.
