Ukraine to sanction Israeli entities over purchases of stolen grain

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced today that Ukraine will be issuing new sanctions against Israeli entities trading in stolen Ukrainian grain from Russia. The announcement came after a second ship carrying stolen Ukrainian grain was noted on its way to the Israeli Port of Haifa.

Earlier this month, the Russian vessel Abinsk I, unloaded up to 43,800 tonnes of wheat in the Port of Haifa. Reacting publicly to the incident, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar feigned ignorance of the event and said an investigation was to be conducted. The Ukrainian government had warned the Israeli government about the vessel up to two weeks in advance.

However, the tone of the Israeli Foreign Minister has now changed as he denies there is any “evidence” of wrongdoing. The Panama-flagged Panormitis (IMO: 9445021) has arrived in Haifa from the Black Sea port of Kavkaz in Russia and is unloading up to 6,200 tonnes of wheat and up to 19,000 tonnes of barley, which Ukraine declares has been stolen.

According to Haaretz, the EU is also considering a sanctions-response to the incidents.
