Canada attended a European Political Summit for the first time ever as the 8th Summit was organised in Armenia’s capital, Yerevan. EU Member states are present along with EU officials. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte is also present. According to official Canadian government statements, Carney held bilateral meetings with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and several European leaders on issues related to security cooperation, trade, democratic resilience and infrastructure.
The other non-EU countries that attended include Albania, Andorra, Armenia (host), Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Iceland, Kosovo, Liechtenstein, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Norway, San Marino, Serbia, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom. The summit agenda focused on European security, economic resilience, energy security, democratic stability and regional connectivity. According to official European Council documentation, leaders discussed cooperation โat a time of profound geopolitical transformationโ under the summitโs motto: โBuilding the Future: Unity and Stability in Europe.โ
The European Political Community was founded by the European Council following calls by French President Emmanuel Macron to organised a wider European-regional dialogue over security and defence in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The summit of the European Political Community will be followed with the first EU-Armenia Summit which will open tomorrow. Under Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Armenia has voted in Parliament to apply for EU membership and is moving towards closer ties.
