EPC and EU-Armenia Summit underscore growing European footprint and international friendships

Earlier today at the European Political Community Summit in Yerevan, leaders underscored the growing importance of energy security, regional cooperation, and continued support for Ukraine. With the attendance of Canada and the growing ties between Armenia and Europe, the summit has symbolised Europe’s growing international ties and footprint as Europe remains the international mainstay of predictable rule-of-law and democratic order.

In his remarks,Prime Ministerย  Mark Carney described Canada as an โ€œenergy superpower,โ€ highlighting the countryโ€™s dual role as both a major oil and gas producer and a leading generator of hydroelectric energy. He stressed that Canada remains committed to ensuring affordable and reliable energy not only for its citizens but also for its international partners, particularly in Europe as the continent continues efforts to diversify away from Russian energy dependence. The Canadian Prime Minister underscored Europe’s international role and importance as he said that the international order will be rebuilt out of Europe.

On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Carney held a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, during which he pledged up to $270 million in additional assistance for Ukraine. The funding is expected to support both military and humanitarian needs, reinforcing Canadaโ€™s continued backing of Kyiv as the war enters another critical phase.

Meanwhile, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted the European Unionโ€™s deepening engagement with Eastern Partnership countries. She praised Moldovaโ€™s progress toward EU integration, noting that the blocโ€™s Growth Plan for Moldova โ€” valued at up to โ‚ฌ1.9 billion โ€” is delivering tangible results in economic reform, infrastructure development, and institutional resilience.

During the EUโ€“Armenia summit segment of the gathering, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan emphasised Armeniaโ€™s commitment to democratic reforms and closer cooperation with European partners. In his address, Pashinyan underscored the importance of peace and stability in the South Caucasus, reiterating Armeniaโ€™s readiness to advance normalisation efforts in the region while safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He also pointed to ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening governance, rule of law, and economic transparency, positioning Armenia as an increasingly reliable partner within the broader European political framework. Prime Minister Pashinyan welcomed the presence of Canada, describing it as a sign of the European Political Communityโ€™s growing relevance and global outreach.
