European Parliament President pushes back against Ilham Aliyev’s rant: “The European Parliament is elected democratically” – Roberta Metsola

Earlier today at the European Political Community Summit, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola delivered a pointed defence of the European Parliament’s democratic legitimacy against comments by Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev.

President Metsola underscored that the European Parliament is composed of directly elected representatives from across the European Union, stressing that its members are accountable to voters and free to express and defend their positions without external pressure. “The European Parliament is a democratic body directly elected by representatives, and its resolutions are adopted by majority vote,” she stated. “The results may create discomfort for many, but we will never change the path we are following, and we will defend the positions we adopt.” she added, in what amounted to a clear rebuke.

Ilham Aliyev is dictator who holds sham elections and imprisons opposition figures. The Azerbaijani dictator lamented that the European Parliament approved fourteen resolutions against Azerbaijan in five years. The EU Parliament’s resolutions against Azerbaijan include resolutions in demanding the release of Armenian prisoners of war and the release of Azerbaijani dissidents Dr Gubad Ibadoghlu and Ilhamiz Guliyev.
