Opposition spokesperson for Finances says the government gives no guarantee debt will decrease: highlights no capital projects

In a debate on the public broadcaster TVM, Opposition spokesperson for finance Adrian Delia said that, as the Finance Minister announced his proposals, he did not provide any guarantees that he would reduce the debt. He also criticised the government’s lack of spending on capital projects, while highlighting that the Nationalist Party is proposing new hospitals.

The Finance Minister defended his proposals, saying that the Labour Party’s pledges are in line with the government’s consistent economic policy. He said that the economy will continue to grow and referred to the labour market which is strong and boasts of the highest employment rates in Europe. However the Finance Minister still did not explain how the latest pledges fit with his original estimates and did not deny that debt will continue to increase.

The Shadow Spokesperson for Finance said that the government was riding the wave of the success of previous Nationalist administrations that introduced new economic sectors, while the Labour government did not bring any new economic niches. Adrian Delia concluded that the solution for the housing crisis was to reduce the population figure Malta and that if the population figure keeps increasing, the problem will not be solved. The Finance Minister defended the Labour government’s track record and said that the government was in line with its estimates and can keep delivering

The Chamber of Commerce has urged political parties restraint over what appears to be a supermarket-style electoral campaign.
