In March the Prime Minister protested against “Opposition blogs” saying they are giving the wrong impression that Malta is a Mafia State. Yesterday, the Prime Minister told us that the biggest oil-contrabandist in Malta pitched him a gas and oil terminal project in Hurd’s Bank which is the same one being pitched by the Nationalist Party. The Opposition Leader has challenged the Prime Minister urging him to take his claims to the Police.
It’s interesting how just a few days in politics can bring about new events and developments that can be both impactful and revelatory. We were discussing the project pitched by the Nationalist Party before the Prime Minister gave the story another twist by effectively telling us that he is aware of criminal acts committed by a Maltese shipping company.
And what’ the Prime Minister going to do about it? Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa is a total joke if he doesn’t call up the Prime Minister to question him about his claims. In a normal country, today we would expect the Prime Minister to walk at the Police Depot in Floriana to provide his statement.
The Prime Minister is not an ordinary civilian and he can not make serious claims without taking full accountability over them. As a the top public official and representative who is bound by Maltese law and the Constitution, he is obliged to deposit his serious claims to the Police and also give an explanation of his statements to the public.
