Behind the backdrop of Labour’s myriad election pledges, there are many changes ongoing within Labour and most of them relate to Joseph Muscat who is consolidating his stronghold over the party. The disgraced ex-Prime Minister is by far the most influential figure in the Party and is principally the major conditioning factor to the Prime Minister, and even his -top officials.
Whatever decision is taken, the primary objective is to protect Joseph Muscat, and all government policy is essentially a continuation of his economic status quo. Muscat is influential within the Party not only because of his direct influence over the Prime Minister and his associates, which enables him to maneuver within the Party, but also because he remains the original architect of the governmentโs core economic thinking.
Franco Mercieca, the Gozitan ophthalmologist is making a comeback in politics – not because he is better placed wasting his time in Parliament instead of fixing eyes. Franco Mercieca’s role will simply be as a vessel for Joseph Muscat’s interests. His son, Charles Mercieca, a previous prosecutor with the Attorney-General’s Office, is the main lawyer for Yorgen Fenech in his trial about the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.
