Will the Institute of Maltese Journalists please stand up?

I’m not expecting for the Institute of Maltese Journalists (IĠM) to stand up and take a strong stand against the Labour Party’s pledge to increase punitive measures against journalists, but it should.

The major issue here is that individuals who ought to provide stiff opposition to the Labour Party’s pledges, are running propaganda campaigns for Labour. Kurt Sansone as President of IĠM should be the first editor, tomorrow, to call for voters to vote against Labour to prevent these measures from taking effect. He can’t do that because his boss is Saviour Balzan who owns MaltaToday.

The publicly-funded press won’t have issues with higher libel damages because they can turn to the public purse. The measures are intended against the small and independent presses which also still do investigative journalism (you can them on the palm of one hand).

    MaltaToday is PL controlled.
    There is no true independent journalism any more — the agenda is to appease the PL — as if we are in North Korea.

    If the electorate re-elects the PL in Government once more, yes, this would mean the demise of true and functional journalism.

    Meanwhile, I take this opportunity to thank Mark Camilleri/The Maltese Herald for giving me (for giving all of us) space to express ourselves, with no hidden agendas.
