Four-year-old succumbs to injuries after Marsaxlokk drowning incident

A four-year-old boy who was rescued unconscious from a swimming pool in Marsaxlokk earlier this week has died, police confirmed on Sunday.

The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday at around 11.45am at a private residence in Triq il-Port Ruman, Marsaxlokk. The child was pulled from the pool by people present at the property before emergency services were called to the scene.

He was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital in critical condition, where he had remained receiving intensive care treatment over the past five days.

Police confirmed on Sunday that the boy had succumbed to his injuries. A magisterial inquiry is ongoing, while police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident also continue.

The tragedy follows two separate drowning incidents involving children in Malta last year.

In one case, six-year-old Zaylen Borg lost his life after drowning in a swimming pool at a private residence in Naxxar after wandering away from relatives. His mother later revealed in an interview that the boy was non-verbal and had autism.

Just a month later, 16-month-old Noah Mizzi died days after falling into a swimming pool at a residence in Gozo.
