Transport Minister Chris Bonett attacks PN’s metro proposal for lack of planning: but his plans come short of solutions and targets

Transport Minister Chris Bonett has crticised the Nationalist Party’s proposal for a metro citing their lack of plans, but the Transport Minister is not in a strong position to defend his plans. The Labour Party has been consistently attacking the Nationalist Party for lacking properly made plans in its proposals and manifesto. You can view the Labour Party propaganda clip here.

Although there is truth in the critique of the PN’s lack of planning and deep thinking in its proposals, it’s quite rich that the Labour Party is making this criticism because it is in no position to argue about planning, figures and forecasts. Prime Minister Robert Abela has governed the country by improvisation, and the traffic crisis is the last thing the Labour Party has any plans for.

The Labour Party is proposing a Third World-like over-ground mono-rail, while simultaneously proposing subsidies for car purchases. The number of cars on the roads is rising at an alarming rate. The population is also expected to increase and Labour has no systematic plan about this crisis. More importantly, Transport Malta is yet to publish any study or plan which shows a transition of car-drivers to public transport or a mass-transport system with actual figures and numbers.

The Labour Party has no plan to address the traffic crisis yet has the gall to attack PN for proposing a metro. Minister Chis Bonnett is currently conducting mitigating measures by promoting the use of new ferries, but ultimately there is no plan and there are no numbers. Meanwhile, Malta’s traffic problems persist.

The traffic crisis is a systematic problem and thus needs systematic solutions. The only systematic solution is a mass transport plan laid out in accordance with urban planning. There is no other solution to this, unless of course we want to become a Third World country with a mono-rail passing over your bedroom.

How can the party in opposition have in depth studies if they have been in opposition for 13 years? Where do they get the money from to finance such studies to just include in the manifesto? But I am sure that have been in discussion with experts and have an indication of what can be done and what cannot be done.
