US Justice Department indicts Raúl Castro: Trump says will liberate Cuba

President Donald Trump is putting his attention on Cuba after claiming that a deal with Iran is very close to be finalised. The news about the Iranian deal has not been confirmed by the Iranian regime who are still deliberating the US proposals.

The US Justice Department has indicted former Cuban President Raúl Castro (brother of Fidel Castro) over his role in the February 24th, 1996, shootdown of two unarmed civilian planes operated by the Miami-based Cuban exile group “Brothers to the Rescue” (Hermanos al Rescate). Cuban Air Force jets shot down the two planes over international waters, off the coast of Florida, killing four people in the process, three who were US nationals. In 1996 Raúl Castro was the Minister of Defence and responsible for the armed forces.

Speaking to reporters and journalists on the indictment at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, US President Donald Trump said this was “a big day” and he expects to liberate Cuba soon with the help of State Secretary Marco Rubio. President Trump said that his State Secretary is working on the issue and that the CIA are also present in Cuba. The US President said that Cubans have been waiting for this moment 65 years and that no escalation will be necessary because the country is falling apart and the Cuban government has lost control.

The Cuban people people have been engaging in occasional spontaneous protests for the past three years with the communist dictatorship experiencing the first ever mass scale protests and revolts in decades. Cuba is embargoed by the United States but the country trades with allies and partners such as Russia, China and Venezuela. Cuba lost its major source of oil imports after Veneuzuela’s dictator Nicolas Maduro was abducted by US forces.
