Welcome to Labour’s Banana Republic

Today’s explosion in Magħtab is an ironic foretelling of Labour’s new government and its future policies. The Labour Party campaigned in favour of the type of environment and legal-system that effectively leads to these incidents. Labour has made a wide and expansive campaign in defence of Maltese “hobbies” and pseudo-traditions such as hunting.

This banal political campaign literally endorsing amateurism and dilettantism is part of Labour’s new Peronist politics that intends, primarily, to give its core voters what they want: namely subsidies. The subsidy and populist economy extends to even supporting a race-track which needs to be built on industrial and natural land and many other inanities.

Supposedly, this should be normalised and celebrated, and it is because this is how a criminal organisation runs a country: with no professional and ethical standards.

Producing fireworks is not a “tradition” and should not be considered as such. The production of fireworks should be handled by certified and professional companies, and not by dilettante individuals making and storing explosives in small country rooms. This should be obvious, but it isn’t for Labour.

Welcome to Labour and to regression.

Poor farmers whose animals died or most probably put to sleep.

This country needs an updated legislation on the amount of explosives these type of factories should handle or store, especially if these are at a close proximity to a neighbour hood. Today’s blast was strong – strong enough to break the glass panes of homes found in Bugibba/Qawra. This means that a huge amount of most probably ammonium nitrate, perchlorate and so on was being stored.

Who is going to pay for the damages to these farmers and people’s homes? And what this government did in past years is give incentives to produce more fireworks that for some factories it has become a business for their so-called “voluntary organization”.

There should be a limit on the number of allowed petards for any event or festa. It is ridiculous that from a traditional canon salute launching imnarja we now use that as an excuse to fire thousands of huge explosions for every feasta twice over and multiple times per week per festa.
