Jason Azzopardi urges Opposition to address corrupt practices in the general election

In a post published recently on social media, previous PN MP Jason Azzopardi is urging the Nationalist Party to take on an investigation about corrupt practices by the Labour Party during the last general election. In his post, Jason Azzopardi also revealed that he has been discarded by the Nationalist Party with the leadership thinking of him as “outdated”.

The Nationalist Party has also been criticised for refusing to discuss corruption during the general election campaign. In a statement released recently by NGO Repubblika, the civil-rights and rule-of-law activists cited the Eurobarometer survey, which shows that the Maltese people perceive a rise in corruption. They said that failing to discuss corruption will help normalise it and urged political parties to implement reforms that would increase transparency in public procurement and also empower whistleblowers.

The Labour Party is being accused of using its power of incumbency to extract and buy votes for itself, including by allowing some prisoners to vote, hiring and promoting government workers, and using the government and government ministries to fund electoral propaganda. Government Ministers also did not relinquish their executive powers as a caretaker government and remained actively engaged in their work, using public resources, including their official ministerial cars.

Some government Ministers even used public funds to throw lavish politically themed celebrations. Transport Minister Chris Bonett threw a party in Marsascala with public funds over the partial opening of Marsascala’s promenade. You can watch the footage of the event below.
