Opposition Leader skips 7th June Ceremony

Opposition Leader Alex Borg has missed the 7th June Ceremony by Parliament yesterday at Saint George’s Square. the ceremony involved the laying of wreaths at the monument of the Seventh June which commemorates the victims who were shot dead by the British troops on the day of the riots.

Deputy-Party Leader Alex Perisci Calascione attended in the name of the Nationalist Party. Alex Borg was campaigning in Gozo during the ceremony. The Prime Minister was present to the ceremony.

The absence of the Opposition Leader can be interpreted as Alex Borg not giving any importance to this event and being somewhat dismissive of Maltese history. He may think that attending ceremonies for a feast very few speak about is a waste of time, and that it is better if he dedicates his time to productive political campaigning.

It is important that politicians celebrate and commemorate our history, and also contextualise it in the politics they conduct and engage in today. It would be a grave mistake to conduct politics in Malta while ignoring the history of politics and of our country, as it would take away the values and ideas that have formed our politics and society instead of addressing them as part of your political narrative. Skipping the ceremony may also be a political statement in itself. The event has often been criticised by descendants of the millers, who claim that their relatives were unfairly targeted and victimised by the crowds during the historic uprising.

The Speaker of Parliament will today visit the Addolorata ceremony to lay wreaths at the burial of the 7th June victims. The President of Malta will oversee a military parade at Saint George’s Square.

    Why did they hold the ceremony on the 5th? On that premise, I would say Alex had every right not to attend.
