Earlier during the night, Russia has struck the Pechersk Lavra Monastery and the Dormition Cathedral in Kyiv, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra (also known as the Kyiv Monastery of the Caves or Kyievo-Pecherska Lavra) is one of the most important and historic Eastern Orthodox monasteries in the world. It sits on the hills overlooking the Dnieper River in the Pecherskyi District of Kyiv. It was founded in 1051 during the Kyivan Rus period.
Russia has targeted historical and religious sites in Ukraine multiple times as part of its attacks on civilians. UNESCO has documented around 530 historical sites which were damaged by Russian airstrikes during its war on Ukraine.
Four civilians were killed in total during the attacks and many more wounded.
Russia’s strikes against civilians are escalating as Ukraine makes significant advances in the frontlines with advances reported in the Zaporizhzhia region.
