The General Workers’ Union has a government-funded press outlet called Talk.mt which is basically a Labour Party propaganda outlet.
The outlet has got nothing to do with workers’ rights, or social issues. It’s role is mainly to recycle and reproduce the Labour Party’s worst demagogic narratives and hateful attacks against its critics. The propagandist running the outlet is Victor Vella, who is aided by Carmen Cachia, Nirayl Grech, Joellson Bezzina and previously, the now government employee Brian Gatt.
The General Worker’s Union provides this propaganda and demagogue service to the Labour Party in exchange for a multitude of government funds and schemes which enable it to survive – it can not exist by itself without government funding and through its own revenue-generating mechanisms.
Obviously, this privilege is only granted to the GWU while other trade unions have to find other ways to survive.
Yesterday, the GWU’s press outlet continued to peddle the Labour Party’s narrative over the laptop of Daphne Caruana Galizia and misreported the testimony of Assistant-Commissioner Keith Arnaud over the evidence provided to him by the family members of Daphne Caruana Galizia. Despite being a trade union press outlet, they have no qualms in attacking government critics, defaming opposition workers and taking the side of organised criminality against victims.
The GWU’s propaganda practices are very shameful but they are not new. The GWU’s newspapers used to be run by a literal fascist who today is ONE’s editor: Josef (or Joseph) Caruana. Joseph Caruana used to edit L-Orizzont with a downright racist and homophobic editorial line apart from defaming and spreading hatred against the Labour Party’s critics.
None of these propogandists who work with Talk.mt carry the social and progressive legacy of the GWU: the press outlet has become one of Malta’s most vile and hateful propaganda cogs in the Labour Party’s propaganda machine and its politics are downright reactionary, pro-Mafia, pro-corruption and pro-evil.
