Very recently, when speaking to press reporters on Air Force One, US President Donald Trump blamed Ukraine for high oil prices and urged Ukraine to stop striking at Russia’s oil facilities.
The new President of the General Workers’ Union, Jason Deguara has echoed President Trump’s argument with a very nonsensical article published in the GWU’s Sunday paper, It-Torċa. In the article, Jason Deguara said that whatever happens with the war Ukraine affects oil prices and said that an escalation can raise prices higher. He also mentions “Brussels” and says that the Labour government is doing the right thing for helping workers with energy subsidies.
Many Labour Party politicians have taken to far-right populism on foreign affairs and this is a convenient political turn as the Labour government captures the Maltese state and enters the world of authoritarianism. Labour politicians like Clint Flores but mostly Alex Agius Saliba have exploited populist and anti-EU sentiments within Labour to promote themselves and gain popularity. This has worked owing to a backdrop of misinformation fueled by Russian subversion and propaganda against the EU and Europe.
Jason Deguara is toeing the far-right populist line within Labour, making nonsensical arguments which somehow hit the far-rights and Moscow’s talking points in Europe. Brussels is sponsoring a war that is not ours, while the Labour government saves the Maltese workers from the whims of Brussels with its benevolent subsidies. This is infantile populism.
The GWU media is notorious for peddling some of the most horrible and vicious content in the information world Malta, attacking journalists and government critics, and even peddling narratives against the family of Daphne Caruana Galizia which implicate them into her murder.
Jason Deguara is just the latest Union official who is espousing populist views. The GWU is practically a department of the Labour Party.
