Saddam Haftar visits Putin in Moscow

Deputy General of the Libyan Army in Benghazi, Saddam Haftar, has visited Vladimir Putin in Moscow for talks. The son of the Libyan rump dictator, Khalifa Haftar, was recently anointed as his father’s successor and has been on a spree of foreign visits ever since.

The Haftars said that the visit took place in response to an invitation by Russia. Before meeting with Putin, Saddam Haftar met with Russia’s Drfence Minister Andrey Belousov.

Russia has a contingent of troops in eastern Libya that supports Khalifa Haftar’s army and they operated from various bases including the, Brak al-Shati, Al-Qadim (Khadim) and Al-Jufra airbases and also Maaten al-Sarra in the south. They are also making use of the base in Qardabiya in Sirtre and the Sabha bae (Tamanhint).

The government of Benghazi, dubbed as the Government of National Stability is also cooperating with Russia over energy and oil matters.

Haftar’s forces have also conducted military exercises in Belarus.
