President of the European Parliament writes heartfelt tribute to Daphne Caruana Galizia

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has written a heartfelt tribute in the form of a personal message to Daphne Caruana Galizia.

President Metsola decried the dark and difficult times Malta is currently experiencing, but said that although the crooks had spent years abusing the country’s institutions to cover up her murder and silence her voice, they ultimately failed. Nearly a decade after she was stopped from writing, Metsola said, Daphne’s pen remains mightier than all their swords combined. She added that they would not stop fighting to see justice done for her murder.

The President of the European Parliament has been consistently supportive of Daphne’s family in their fight for justice, having participated in European Parliament fact-finding missions to Malta over the murder investigation and repeatedly calling for full accountability. She has also strongly championed the Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism, the European Parliament’s €20,000 annual award honouring investigative journalism and press freedom.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has continued to use the annual prize ceremony to demand justice for Daphne and her family. In 2025, she said that Daphne’s family — and Europe — were “still waiting for justice to be served”, adding that the European Parliament had a responsibility to keep pushing for it.

  3. Roberta Metsola’s comment sounds lovely, but it is difficult to take seriously. While acknowledging that she had no obligation to run for leader of the opposition (and possibly lead the Nationalist Party into government) when the opportunity arose, it is widely understood that people voted for her (for the European Parliament) in such great numbers because they expected her to lead the nation into brighter, cleaner and less corrupt times.

Mrs Metsola skipped that chance in favour of what seems to be a relatively comfortable appointment in the European Union (and probably new ones to come).

For all those of us who believed in her, we are shocked, not because we expected her to be better off being a leader of the Nationalist Party (no doubt a thankless job) but because we thought she was as fearless and uncompromising as Daphne Caruana Galizia was.

Obviously, it would be rude to expect that a lady just trying to get along (like the rest of us) put her life, and future, on the line just because this little country is in a crisis, but this is what her political campaigns seemed to promise.

This is where the Great Disappointment comes from. Despite being a perfectly respectable and decent person with the right ideas (and who probably will always find ways to extend her career in European Union institutions), it is difficult to escape the feeling that, for Malta, the opportunity has passed. She refused to step up when a red carpet was laid out for her, and we are all the worse for it.
