The Labour government today rejected the Opposition’s motion presented in Parliament to open a discussion on the implementation of the reforms proposed by the public inquiry into the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia.
The Prime Minister reiterated that “caution” and silence were the best options right now.
The Labour government is trying to use a banal argument, implying that it will “let the institutions work” when those institutions have failed catastrophically.
Government MPs used their opportunity in Parliament today mostly to take a combative stance against the Opposition instead of discussing the ramifications of the verdict. Home Affairs Minister Glenn Bedingfield hurled insults at the Opposition, while Ramona Attard reiterated her call for increased libel damages.
The Prime Minister accused the Opposition of being partisan and of not genuinely being interested in bringing justice to the family of Daphne Caruana Galizia.
Labour is essentially ensuring that the ramifications of Yorgen Fenech’s verdict are allowed to unfold unchecked. They are genuinely happy that no justice has been served, out of spite for Daphne, and the country is currently leaderless during a national crisis.
