In his very typical manner, US President Donald Trump has announced an action in a bombastic manner which seems to be a very routine procedure.
The US President has announced that the US has acquired rights “FOREVER” to ensure the security of Greenland and deploy troops there.
The US already has very broad rights to deploy and move troops in Greenland through its 1951 agreement with Denmark, which, however, is clearly under the condition that it does not prejudice Denmark’s sovereignty over the territory.
According to Reuters, Denmark confirmed that the agreement will be signed but gave no further details. The new agreement builds on the 1951 agreement, which was previously amended in 2004.
However, US President Trump hinted at increased US military deployment in Greenland, which would still be in line with the old agreement.
Greenland has repeatedly reiterated that it doesn’t want to be part of the US and seeks independence.
