The major political parties in Greenland issued a joint statement rejecting the statements made by President Trump over a potential US takeover of Greenland during his meeting with NATO’s Secretary General Mark Rutte. In a collective statement, Greenland’s parties said that they “cannot accept the repeated statements about annexation and control of Greenland. As party chairman, we find this behavior unacceptable to friends and allies in a defense alliance.”
Secretary General Mark Rutte refused to comment on the matter in front of President Trump. Greenland’s political parties concluded their statement by saying that Greenland is once country and that every Greenlander stands behind it.
There is broad consensus in Greenland over independence from Denmark, as well as remaining independent and not joining the US. The centre-right Demokraatit Party, previously the main Opposition party, has just won the elections in Greenland with 30% of the vote. Party Chairman Jens-Frederik Nielsen repeatedly stated that Greenlanders want to be independent and neither part of the US or Denmark. Naleraq, which is in favour of independence but supports stronger relations with the US came second with up to 24.5% of the vote. The incumbent ruling-party, and left-wing Inuit Ataqatigiit came third with 21.6% of the vote.
