US Vice-President JD Vance to go to Greenland uninvited: says Greenland is being used to threaten the US

US Vice-President JD Vance announced that he will travel to Greenland tomorrow, uninvited, along with his wife, Usha Vance, and the US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, who are visiting to watch the national dogsled race. A Danish naval ship is patrolling Greenland’s coast, and a Danish special police unit has also arrived in advance of the event.

Taking a leaf from Russian propaganda, in a videoed broadcast the Vice-President said that Greenland is being used to threaten the US. President Trump repeatedly threatened to annex Greenland for security reasons and to take its mineral resources and the US President echoed his words saying Greenland posed a security threat to Canada and the US, but the US wants to change this. President Trump is also saying that foreign ships patrolling Greenland’s waters are a threat to the US. Denmark is also bolstering its military presence on the island but there is no evidence of President Trump’s remarks. .

Greenland’s incoming Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has condemned the visit saying it shows lack of respect during sensitive negotiations, and reiterated that “Greenland is not a commodity”.ย  All political parties reject the US demand to annex their country.
