New Greenland’s Prime Minister says US takeover won’t happen

In one of his first public statements after being sworn-in as Greenland’s new Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen said that Greenland is not for sale and will not become part of the United States.

In a message written in Danish, Greenland’s Prime Minister wrote that:

“We should listen when others talk about us. But we should not let ourselves be shaken. President Trump says that the USA “will get Greenland.” Let me make it clear: That’s not how the USA works. We belong to no one else. We decide our own future. We must not react with fear. We must respond with calm, dignity, and unity. And it is precisely by doing that, clearly, calmly, and firmly, that we show the American president that Greenland is not for sale. That’s how it was yesterday. That’s how it is today. And that’s how it will remain going forward.”

A new government coalition was formed with all the parties in parliament except for Naleraq which is staunchly pro-independence. All major political parties in Greenland oppose becoming part of the United States.

US Vice-President JD Vance had to cancel his uninvited trip to Greenland’s annual dog sled-race after his visit was described as disrespectful by the new Prime Minister. The US Vice-President restricted his visit to the US base in Putiffik as a result.

US President Trump repeatedly insisted that the US will get Greenland due to its security concerns including Russian and Chinese ships. Meanwhile, President Trump wants to make peace with Russia and calls Vladimir Putin his “friend”.
