French President Emmanuel Macron visited Greenland and was greeted at the airport by Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. He was cheered by onlookers at the airport before taking a trip to the Danish Frigate F363 Niels Juel where the trio of leaders discussed security and the Arctic.
Following the trip to the frigate, the leadership trio gave a press conference in Greenland’s capital Nuuk, in which President Macron stated Europe’s and France’s support to Greenland’s territorial sovereignty and said that “Greenland is not to be sold and not to be taken”. Greenland’s Premier also reiterated that Greenland isn’t for sale and said that Greenland “will never, ever be a piece of property that can be bought by just anyone.” Greenland’s Prime Minister also thanked Denmark, France and Europe for defending Greenland’s autonomy.
The Danish Prime Minister stressed that NATO unity is important for its existence and added that an attack on Greenland by the US would challenge NATO unity and the trans-Atlantic alliance. The Danish Prime Minister also reiterated her support for Greenland’s self-determination.
US President Donald Trump is pressuring Greenland to become part of the United States, and also threatened Greenland and Denmark by saying that this will be an inevitable outcome. The US Vice-President JD Vance had to cancel a visit to Greenland after the local population reacted negatively to his planned, uninvited trip. France has also signed a bilateral agreement with Denmark guaranteeing its borders and sovereignty.
