Qormi made an emphatic start to their BOV National League I campaign with a 5-0 victory over Pembroke Athleta, while newly promoted Dingli Swallows and Kalkara United also registered victories on an eventful opening weekend.
Qrendi secured a dramatic stoppage-time victory over Senglea Athletic, while Mqabba and Lija Athletic shared the points. Meanwhile, Mellieħa were awarded a 3-0 victory after Mtarfa failed to turn up for their scheduled encounter.
Qormi make emphatic start against Pembroke
Qormi underlined their promotion ambitions with an impressive 5-0 victory over Pembroke Athleta at the Centenary Stadium on Sunday.
Clive Mizzi’s side dominated the opening exchanges, racing into a three-goal lead within just 13 minutes.
Jayden Borg opened the scoring after seven minutes following good work by Emmanuel Garba, who doubled Qormi’s advantage just two minutes later after Borg returned the favour.
Joseph Ogunnupe added a third in the 13th minute before Garba struck again with a powerful effort from outside the penalty area in the 36th minute.
Pembroke improved after the interval but were unable to seriously threaten Qormi’s commanding advantage.
Garba completed his hat-trick in the 79th minute, converting a pass from substitute Daniel GTA following an impressive run down the right flank.
Dingli stun San Ġwann
Newly promoted Dingli Swallows enjoyed a dream start to their campaign with a 2-0 victory over San Ġwann at the Luxol Stadium.
Despite San Ġwann enjoying considerable possession and creating several opportunities, Dingli took the lead through Fabrizio Zammit in first-half stoppage time.
The Saints had earlier suffered a setback when striker Joshua Osebomen sustained an injury that required hospital treatment.
Dingli doubled their advantage just two minutes after the restart when a shot from Jamaican captain Ronaldinho Daley was deflected into the net by a San Ġwann defender.
Nicolai Caruana’s side subsequently defended their advantage to secure three valuable points.
Bray’s late penalty gives Qrendi dramatic victory
Qrendi emerged 3-2 winners against Senglea Athletic in an entertaining encounter at the Sirens Stadium, with substitute Brandon Bray converting the decisive penalty deep into stoppage time.
Christian Saint Ebisindor put Qrendi ahead from the penalty spot after ten minutes before Gianfranco Micallef doubled their advantage seven minutes into the second half.
However, Senglea fought back through Matthew Brincat, who converted another penalty shortly before the hour, and Johan Castano, who equalised seven minutes from time.
With the match seemingly heading towards a draw, Jake Stensen brought down Bray inside the penalty area four minutes into stoppage time.
Bray converted the resulting penalty, registering his 50th official goal for Qrendi and securing all three points for Conrad Debattista’s side.
Kalkara fight back twice to defeat Marsa
Kalkara United marked their return to National League I with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Marsa at the Luxol Stadium.
Following a goalless first half, Johann Bezzina put Marsa ahead just two minutes after the restart.
David Akindele equalised three minutes later, but Matthias Bugeja restored Marsa’s advantage in the 57th minute.
Akindele struck again four minutes later to bring Kalkara level for the second time.
Marsa came close to regaining the lead when Davi Versiani struck the post in the 72nd minute.
However, Miguel Perez Jimenez emerged as Kalkara’s match-winner, scoring three minutes from time to complete a memorable opening-day victory.
Lija rescue late point against Mqabba
Mqabba and Lija Athletic shared the points following a 1-1 draw at the Mosta Ground in Friday’s opening encounter.
Brazilian striker João Vitor Florencio, known as Robinho, put Mqabba ahead five minutes before half-time with an excellent finish.
Lija responded strongly after the interval, with Ross McParland and Omar Khatib both threatening the Mqabba goal.
However, goalkeeper Mario Bartolo produced important saves to preserve his team’s advantage.
Lija’s persistence eventually paid off when substitute Jake Cordina struck in the closing stages to secure a point for Joseph Galea’s side.
Mellieħa awarded victory following Mtarfa no-show
The scheduled encounter between Mellieħa and Mtarfa at the Sirens Stadium did not take place after Mtarfa failed to appear.
Mellieħa’s players waited on the pitch for the required ten minutes following the scheduled 8.30pm kick-off.
Under competition regulations, Mellieħa were subsequently awarded a 3-0 victory.
