Yesterday in Parliament, Home Affairs Minister Glenn Bedingfield lamented that Jaden Degiorgio, the 21-year-old son of convicted murderer George Degiorgio, was granted bail in a drug-trafficking case.
Jaden Degiorgio was one of eight people arrested during the weekend in a series of Police raids in relation to drug trafficking. The investigation involving Jayden Degiorgio began on 24 September, when he was first arrested in Mellieħa.
He was arrested again during the weekend in relation raid on a garage in Żurrieq, where police discovered approximately 28 kilogrammes of suspected drugs concealed in wooden compartments. The haul comprised around 20.7 kilogrammes of heroin and 7.7 kilogrammes of cocaine.
Jayden Degiorgio was charged with aggravated possession, trafficking and importation of heroin and cocaine, as well as associating with others to sell and traffic the drugs and committing money-laundering offences. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
On Saturday, 10 October, Magistrate Lara Lanfranco granted him bail against a €30,000 deposit, including a €20,000 third-party guarantee, and a €50,000 personal guarantee. He was also ordered to sign the bail book twice daily, observe a curfew between 9pm and 6am, attend all court sittings and refrain from approaching potential witnesses. He is prohibited from travelling without the court’s authorisation.
The prosecution had objected to bail.
Home Affairs Minister Glenn Bedingfield said that every Court decision had to be respected, while acknowledging the disappointment felt by police following the bail decision. He then also called for an intensified fight against drugs.
Note the difference of the Minister’s stance with regards to Yorgen Fenech’s verdict when he focused his speech in Parliament on attacking the Opposition for joining protests against Yorgen Fenech’s verdict. The Minister is very selective on his indignation about crime, restricting his indignation to the blue-collar and obvious hard-criminals who are routinely brought to Justice. He has a very different perspective and attitude when it comes to crime involving politicians, corruption, bribery and sophisticated financial crime by white-collar criminals. Waging war on drugs and illegal immigrants are typically the hallmarks of any right-wing Home Affairs Minister.
I would like the Minister to be just as indignant about Electrogas and all that came with it as he is about drug traffickers and illegal migrants.
Jaden Degiorgio is the son of George Degiorgio, who is serving a 40-year prison sentence for executing the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia. Photos of Jayden Degiorgio and his father were initially published here.
