400 people arrested in France after widespread looting and riots

Around 400 people were arrested in France yesterday following protests in multiple cities. Up to one million people were estimated to have taken part in the demonstrations, which began with students protesting over the state of schools and the lack of teachers.

The protests then escalated with the support of trade unions and public sector workers. However, yesterday’s protests turned violent, with many young people turning to looting, rioting and clashes with police. Many also brandished Palestinian flags. A historic town hall in the town of Limoges was also set on fire during the unrest.

French President Emmanuel Macron said that violence would not be tolerated, as authorities faced mounting pressure to restore order. The protests were also endorsed by the Communist Party of France and other far-left political parties.

While many marches remained peaceful, clashes and looting took place in several cities, including Paris, Lyon and Marseille.

Protestors protested about the the high cost of living but many young people have taken the opportunity of the protests to cause unrest, violence and looting.
