Home Affairs Minister in Italy discussing Malta’s security

Home Affairs Minister Glenn Bedingfield was in Italy earlier this week meeting his Defence Counterpart Minister Guido Crossetto of October 19th. The Minister made his two day-visit along with the Armed Forces of Malta Brigadier

The visit concerned about security in the Mediterranean and the Minister announced that they are discussing re-writing the 1980 agreement in which Italy assured Malta’s neutrality and security.

The visit’s timing coincides with Libya’s announcement of a new maritime border with Turkey which defies brooders with Greece and Cyprus. The EU is opposing this deal.

The Libya-Turkey deal also coincided with a high-level Maltese delegation to Benghazi. Minister Bedingfield also visited Tripoli.

The story here is that the Maltese government is concerned about its security while Libya and Turkey unilaterally draw maritime borders in the Mediterranean Sea. Malta is finding ways to protect its interests against this expansionism. However, Malta’s security concerns are not being expressed publicly.
