US President Trump announces Cuban “stop-over”: Marco Rubio ropes in the CIA

On Friday, at a rally in Fort Myers, Florida, US President Donald Trump announced that US forces would be stopping near Cuba on their way back to the US.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has encouraged the country’s dissidents to contact the CIA discreetly.

Rumours of a US invasion of Cuba have been swirling around Washington since earlier this year, following the US intervention in Venezuela, which involved US forces capturing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Protests have also been ongoing in Cuba due to persistent power blackouts and food shortages.

The US Secretary of State, whose parents were Cuban immigrants, has made Cuba a priority in his portfolio and has increased pressure on its communist regime by imposing additional sanctions on the regime’s financial arm GAESA and other financial and banking entities.

However, it is unclear to what extent the US government is ready to go with regard to Cuba and whether it will pursue regime change.
