In his New Year’s message Xi Jinping says Taiwan will reunify with China

In what seems to be a very cold but explicit message, China’s President Xi Jinping has said in his New Year’s message that Taiwan will reunify China. Xi Jinping has been preparing for war for the past two years by making belligerent speeches to naval and military officers and moving Chinese forces near Taiwan and the Chinese eastern coast while also putting them on battle-ready status. Xi Jinping has also been tightening his grip on power, both in the Communist Party and in the government, enforcing new tightened supervision on foreign and big local companies, and has been reducing his state’s foreign counter-party risk by selling its US Treasuries and buying gold.

  1. What contingency are the US and EU working on with regards to semiconductor production to ensure demand can be met once the inevitable happens? This is just one of the issues. Regional and ultimately global destabilization. Human cost. I recall reading a high ranking military official stating things will come to a head in 2025.

The US has setup a 350 billion fund to support local chip production and EU has started on something similar. However the heart of advanced chip production is Taiwan with South Korea second and US third. There is no dependency on China but Taiwan is a clear risk. EU specifically Netherlands hold the key to advanced microchip production. The real challenge is stopping China from copying advanced microchips for which the US has put many barriers in place but that’s going to be very difficult to stop in practice

[…] Anthony Blinken is known to wear his sad face whenever he speaks to dictators, but I can hardly believe that Blinken held a meeting with Xi Jinping without mentioning Taiwan – this is what is mostly worrying the US about China. 5. […] China has started the year by doing what it has increasingly been doing during the past few years, which is pushing its military aircraft and vessels into Taiwan’s space. This kind of tactic is extremely provocatory since if pushed further enough, Taiwan would be accused by China of starting a war against it if retaliates against this provocation.? China has been deploying grey zone tactics against Taiwan regularly and it intends to annex it. […]
