Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has died at 100 years old. A Democratic Senator from Georgia, Jimmy Carter was a Navy veteran and a civil-rights activist. He was the US President from 1977 to 1981.
As US President he campaigned for world peace, and nuclear disarmament, and also signed a an arms treaty with the Soviet Union to limit nuclear-weapons stockpiles (SALT II). However, U.S. President Jimmy Carter will be most remembered for advancing the policy initiated by President Richard Nixon to recognise Communist China. In 1979, President Carter withdrew U.S. support of Taiwan, formally recognising China instead. He also canceled a defense treaty with Taiwan, leaving the island more vulnerable to a potential Chinese invasion.
Today, China is making very clear its intentions to invade and occupy Taiwan while regularly surrounding it with warships and warplanes.
US President Carter retired from politics to take care of his small family business consisting of a peanut farm in Georgia.
