Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa has given a very self-gratifying interview to Newsbook on Andrew Azzopardi’s show today. Gafa can be seen and heard at the end of the show.
He said nothing new in the interview, but he did take his take lie, brag and even attack his critics by accusing them of malicious disinformation. He also said that his critics are only four people and these are Repubblika and their allies. He also said that according to the Eurobarometer the Maltese have more trust in the police than in the media, so apparently, and according to him, he has a good reputation and there is nothing to worry about.
He also says he is being maliciously smeared for his property purchase which he got from legitimate money.
Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa is not stupid and in defending himself he is using the Labour Party’s book: look at the numbers and see that I am winning, so there is nothing to worry about.
The numbers he is citing do not serve his argument because people perceive the Police in terms of its members more than the through the actions of its Police Commissioner. So, people in general will be, in principle more supportive of the police than they are of the government which is perceived through its Ministers and not the civil service. On the other hand, the Eurobarometre question does not reflect the complex realities on the ground, such as for example the fact, that many who say that don’t trust the media, are mostly ONE and TVM viewers who don’t trust the independent media.
Of course there is a very large demographic that doesn’t trust the independent media and instead trusts ONE and the Labour Party. That’s why we have an electorate which is ready to vote in Labour in power because they don’t care about the rule of law of crisis. It doesn’t mean it is right. The Police Commissioner is not playing a popularity contest. John Rizzo was unpopular because he was actually very strict and tough on crime. In an economy where rent-seeking is the rule rather than the exception, the people’s expectations of the police are quite different from a society which already has a functional rule of law. For starters, we have people who find no problem about the fact that the Police Commissioner is corrupt.
Clearly, Angelo Gafa knows all of this. He also knows that being a Police Commissioner is not a popularity contest, but he thinks, acts and speaks exactly like a Labour apparatchik because for many years in his career, that’s how he has been forged. This is also why he lies, of course.
No one is perpetuating a malicious disinformation campaign against him. The only malicious disinformation campaign that we had was one by a retired group of intelligence and military personnel conducted against out own Deputy-Prime Minister, a campaign that compromised our democracy and which he, the Police Commissioner himself, failed to prevent and discover.
Of course he is dishonest because he has no respected for his role and the State. Just like he lies about the disinformation campaign about him personally and his property purchase.
There is nothing wrong in purchasing a villa, but it is of public interest to know that the Police Commissioner would risk defaulting on his mortgage if he misses a couple of consecutive monthly payments. This makes him susceptible and vulnerable to an excessive financial dependancy on his current role due to a loan that is too big for him.
No one has any personal interest against Angelo Gafa. I know all his personal history and story and even his public and embarressing misdemanours as a young man. I could smear him and his wife for their infantile banalities when they were younger, but what’s the point?
I have nothing against him personally. I won’t benefit personally if he is replaced by someone else. If anything, a new Police Commissioner would be even stricter. Gafa is delusional to think he can get away by talking the Labour Party’s book. He’s also deeply naive by bragging for being praised by foreign ambassadors. What does he expect them to do if he is contact with them?
Angelo Gafa is responsible for our rule of law crisis and the current extended cover-up of Labour Party politicians. This is not disinformation, but a well-documented history. This website in particular has documented his history in office quite extensively and one can find many material on this website about Gafa as Police Commissioner by using the search box.
