Vice-President Kamala Harris admits to using military aid to Israel as leverage to bring a ceasefire

In an interesting admission made earlier this week on Fox News, Vice-President Kamala Harris claimed that the United States stopped providing Israel with 200 pounds bombs when replying to questions on how the US can help bring an immediate end to the war in Gaza. The ban was announced last May before Israel intended to storm Rafah, the last “safe” enclave in Gaza where more than 1.5 million refugees are living in tents.

Israel has massacred more than 20,000 civilians including women and children making the United States a potential abettor of war crimes. The Vice-President also claimed that her policy on the current war in Gaza is to bring an a ceasefire as soon as possible.

The ban seems to have come quite late given that the US had already provided Israel with thousands of 2000-pound bombs, Israel also used US bombs to bomb tents in Rafah, however, Israel did indeed cancel plans to storm Rafah following pressure from the United States.

    This is old news. As you yourself pointed out, the ‘pause’ (not a ‘halt’) in shipments of 2,000-pound bombs was announced last May, and was widely understood to be leverage being used by the Biden administration to force Israel to be less deadly in its attacks, and eventually to make a deal with Hamas.

    That leverage has clearly failed, as months of a climbing civilian death toll clearly shows, as well as inability or unwillingness on the part of Israel to compromise in negotiations. Meanwhile, despite its frustration, the Biden administration still has stood by its ally and continued sending it other types of weaponry. The ‘pause’ (is it still in effect?) was only a slap on the wrist.

    If there is anything to be learnt from the Fox News video clip, it is that, for whatever reason (she agrees with the policy; she has no new ideas; her hands are tied; maybe she reckons she needs pro-Israel votes), a President Kamala Harris would continue the same policy towards Israel that the current American administration has.

    She was asked whether she has a different policy to the current one and she said “we need to get this deal done”, which is exactly what Secretary of State Antony Blinken has been trying unsuccessfully to do for months. Then, she mentioned the months-old, 2,000-pound bomb failed policy when pressed further. So there is nothing new to see.

    “Nothing new by Harris on Israel” would have been a more accurate headline to this article.
