After various confirmations from local maritime authorities and officials familiar with the work of Malta’s Sanctions Monitoring Board, The Maltese Herald can confirm that the large oil sales recorded in Malta to Nigeria, took place via ship-to-ship transfers in Hurd’s Bank. Given that Malta was the nearest location where these trades took place, they were recorded to have taken place in Malta.
The Maltese Herald was informed by its sources that local maritime authorities have been coordinating with various local and foreign entities in a data-sharing initiative. A coordinated effort by the government is underway to implement measures that will enhance local authorities’ oversight over the oil trade in Malta and outside its waters. Announcements from the government regarding this matter are expected in the coming weeks and months.
