Pedro Sanchez criticised for refusing to declare a State of Emergency over floods in Valencia

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is being criticised by most of the political opposition for refusing to declare a State of Emergency over floods in the province of Valencia that killed more than 200 people and left havoc across different towns. The Prime Minister drew more ire against him after giving a disastrous press conference where he said “If they (the Valencian authorities) need help, they should ask for it”.

The Spanish government is being criticised for its slow response to the disaster with residents complaining that in some areas it was French rescue-teams that arrived first on the scene. The European Union activated its rescue and coordination systems following the disaster.
