Yesterday, US President Joe Biden announced a US-brokered ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel starting at 4AM today. Israel which currently controls all of Lebanon’s southern border is supposed to withdraw within sixty days as the Lebanese Army takes over. Hezbollah won’t be allowed to re-arm and re-group in southern Lebanon.
Lebanese citizens were filmed driving to their homes to the south of Lebanon as the news broke out.
Israel conducted dozens of air-strikes across southern Lebanon and in Beirut shortly before the ceasefire kicked-off, while Hezbollah kept shelling towns and villages in Idlib, Syria. Hezbollah won’t be disarming as an armed unit but will supposedly pull out its fighters from the south of Lebanon.
More than 3,800 people have been killed and up to 16,000 injured in Lebanon due to Israeli attacks since the war on Gaza began last year, with approximately 1.4 million Lebanese residents displaced. Israel has suffered up to 80 military casualties and 40 civilian deaths in response to Hezbollah’s attacks, with up to 100,000 residents from northern Israel displaced.
