Israel seems to have been pressed by the US government to declare a ceasefire in Lebanon after declaring a ceasefire in Iran pending negotiations. Prime Minister Benjain Netanyahu yesterday said that he had instructed his cabinet to begin ceasefire negotiations with the Lebanese government. Talks between Lebanese and Israeli diplomats are scheduled to be held in Washington next week.
Days earlier, the Israeli government had said that the ceasefire in Iran does not apply to Lebanon but this statement is also being contradicted by the Iranian regime.
Israel kept bombing the south of Lebanon today after conducting heavy airstrikes yesterday through various parts of the country including in the city centre of Beirut earlier this week. Israel targeted Hezbollah members and leaders but civilians and Lebanese Army officials were also among the dead. Israel claims to have killed up to 2740 Hezbollah fighters but many civilians have also been killed. Over one million people remain displaced from their homes.
The EU High Representative condemned Israel’s bombings of Beirut on April 8th saying that the bombings were heavy-handed and put the current US-Iran ceasefire under strain. She also added that Hezbollah must disarm and the EU supports Lebanon’s efforts to disarm the terror group. Hezbollah was supposed to disarm and withdraw from the south of Lebanon as per its latest ceasefire agreement with Israel in 2024.
